ExPO Contest

We are pleased to announce the ExPO Art Contest, an initiative designed to highlight the creative and aesthetic dimensions of laboratory work. This contest invites participants of the ExTech conference to create and submit an original artwork derived from, or inspired by, laboratory techniques used in sample preparation, extraction, and separation science.

Theme and Scope

  • Artworks must be created using laboratory techniques (e.g. extraction processes, chromatography, crystallization, filtration, microscopy, etc.).
  • Artworks can be two-dimensional (flat images, chromatograms, TLC plates, crystallization patterns, solvent interactions, etc.) or three-dimensional (sculptures, objects, or assemblies created using laboratory materials or inspired by lab techniques).
  • Works do not need to originate from analytical data, but they must clearly employ or be inspired by laboratory techniques.

Submission Format

  • Each participant may submit up to two artworks.
  • Submissions must be provided as a PDF file in A3 format (portrait or landscape). As indicative technical specifications, a resolution of 300 ppi at final size (297 × 420 mm) is recommended to ensure high print quality.
  • The organizing committee will be responsible for printing the selected 2D artworks in high quality for exhibition at the conference. Three-dimensional works will be displayed as submitted; high-quality photographic printing of 3D objects will only be arranged upon specific request.
  • If the artwork is a physical object (e.g. a sculpture or installation), a high-quality photograph of the piece must be submitted in A3 PDF format. If you wish to present the original object during the conference, you may bring it at your own responsibility. The organizing team must be informed in advance, preferably at the time of submission, and the dimensions of the object must be specified.
  • Each submission must include a title and a short description (max. 100 words), indicating the laboratory technique(s) used and the concept behind the work.

Exhibition and Voting

  • All accepted submissions will be displayed during the ExTech conference as part of the ExPO exhibition.
  • During the conference, each participant will be invited to give a max. 2-minute presentation on stage to briefly introduce their artwork, the techniques employed, and its concept.
  • Conference participants will have the opportunity to view and vote for their favorite artwork.
  • The winning entries will be announced at the closing session, and awards will be presented.

Important Notes

  • Submissions must be original and created by the submitting participant.
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are not permitted for generating or modifying images. Digital adjustments are limited to basic corrections (e.g. contrast, brightness, cropping, orientation).
  • The primary creative element must originate from laboratory techniques rather than digital post-processing. Outputs directly generated by analytical instrumentation (e.g., chromatograms, spectra, or similar data visualizations) are eligible, provided that digital processing is limited to minor adjustments (e.g., cropping, contrast, or color balance) and does not constitute the main creative contribution.
  • By submitting, participants grant permission for their artworks to be displayed during the conference and featured in conference communications.

Submission Deadline

  • Please send your applications by 8th June 2026 to extech2026@uliege.be.
